Thinking about spending a few days on Elba in October? Beyond the beaches, there are villages to explore, nature trails to discover and plenty of ways to plan a weekend around your interests.
You can combine a seaside walk with a visit to Portoferraio’s historic centre, explore Capoliveri or spend a day hiking in the cooler weather. Your plans will depend on the forecast and how much time you have; choosing where to stay starts with the areas you want to visit and how you prefer to get around.
Here are our tips on what to do on Elba in October, where to stay and how to get around, along with the information to check before you travel.
Elba’s beaches in October: where to go and what to do
Even in October, you can include the beaches in your holiday plans, whether for a walk, some time by the sea or a swim when conditions allow.
La Biodola is a good choice for a walk along the sand, while Marina di Campo lets you combine the beach with a visit to the town. If you prefer a coastline of white pebbles and cliffs, consider Capo Bianco and Sansone, in the Portoferraio area, keeping in mind the access paths to each beach.
When deciding where to go, consider the weather forecast, wind and sea conditions. Whether you can swim also depends on the water temperature: in October, it is best to plan a variety of activities rather than expect to swim every day.
Before you travel, also check which beach services are open: beach clubs, bars and rental facilities may operate seasonally.
Walking and hiking: which route should you choose?
If you would like to spend part of your stay walking, you can choose between short routes and more demanding hikes. As well as distance, consider the elevation gain and terrain.
Enfola circular route — easy to moderate
In the Portoferraio area, this route follows the Enfola headland through Mediterranean scrub, with coastal views and the remains of military fortifications. The route described is approximately 5 km long, with 243 metres of elevation gain. It is an option for anyone looking for a relatively short hike, but it includes climbs and sections on trails: it is not a flat walk.
From Marciana to Madonna del Monte — easy to moderate, with a more sustained climb
From the village of Marciana, follow the old stone-paved Stations of the Cross route towards the sanctuary. The route description gives a total distance of 3.4 km and 322 metres of elevation gain. It is shorter than the Enfola route, but still requires a reasonable level of fitness, especially on the steeper final sections. You can combine the hike with a visit to Marciana.
From Marciana to Monte Capanne, descending to Pomonte — difficult
For experienced hikers, this route crosses the Monte Capanne massif and reaches the summit before descending towards Pomonte. Allow for approximately 11.9 km, 732 metres of elevation gain and 6 hours of walking, plus breaks. It requires fitness and confidence on steep, rocky terrain. The start and finish are in different villages, so you will also need to arrange your return journey.
Looking for something less demanding?
Choose a walk along the waterfront in Porto Azzurro or Marina di Campo, deciding how far to go as you walk. These are more suitable alternatives if you want to avoid the climbs involved in a hike.
In October, check trail conditions and the weather forecast before setting off, bring water, wear hiking shoes and plan to return before dark.
Where to stay on Elba in October
The best area depends on what you want to visit and how you prefer to get around. Here are four options:
- Portoferraio: a base for combining the historic centre with the beaches of Capo Bianco and Sansone and walks around Enfola.
- Marina di Campo: worth considering if you want to alternate between the beach and the town. Choose a holiday home near the centre if you would like to get around on foot.
- Capoliveri: staying in the village lets you enjoy village life, while choosing a holiday home on the coast puts you closer to the beaches. Check distances against your planned activities.
- Porto Azzurro: an option for those who enjoy waterfront walks and want to use the town as a base for exploring the island.
For an autumn stay, also check the heating, kitchen facilities and indoor living spaces. Before booking, check the actual route to the centre, parking if you are travelling by car, and which local services will be open during your stay.
